November 29, 2011 Meeting

Julia had asked people to bring in UFO's they had finally finished and there were some takers. Linda finished a caterpillar quilt for her grandson, Rita finished a star quilt for a new baby and Julia finished a halloween witch.
Julia also discussed starting a mystery quilt in the new year, with a lot of time to do each block. There were many quilters interested in this project We then had a fabric exchange and most people went home with some new wonderful fabric.

Hi Everyone:

Well, as you know yesterday was the AGM of the CQQ. It was a great day to be indoors talking anything quilt or quilt related. It was cold, rainy and windy, in general - miserable. Saw an incredible rainbow on the way home - you could see it almost end to end!! Beautiful!! (no pics unfortunately, couldn't stop the car on the bridge).

But I do have pics of the group of us that went hard at work making the block for the CQQ quilt. This quilt will be raffled off at the AGM in 2013. Great reason to attend the meeting!! You can't see her, but in there anyway is Marilyn (now known as Serafina). It was great to see her again and hear about all her new ventures and adventures. Always fun to see Marilyn, oops, Serafina!!

The next shot is of our group showing off all
our community service projects. Good job ladies.
So many of the guilds had community projects
to show and they are fabulous, from quilts of
valour for our soldiers, bags with blankets for
cancer patients, pillows for breast cancer patients,
the list goes on and on. What a caring bunch quilters are!!

And this is the picture of some of the group from Bethany's class and their results. I think you'll agree - beautiful work!!

Many thanks to the Lachute guild who did a wonderful job. We had plenty of hot coffee and tea to greet us in the morning and huge amounts of sweets. Also four vendors with plenty for everyone. Hard not to spend some money!!

Hopefully, next year we have even a larger group. It's a fun day and it's great to see other quilters we've met over the years and don't get to see that often.

Tuesday's Guild Meeting

Hi Everyone:
A quick update on what's happening. Two main topics tonight - the CQQ AGM and Jennifer's Trunk Show. I guess about 8 - 10 of us will be heading up to Lachute with our "circle" or "design" quilts from our workshop. We won the bursury last year to be used for a teacher, so we have to show our 'stuff'.

We will be bringing our Christmas placemats for
Meals on Wheels and our Mom quilts for
Elizabeth House, one of which is pictured below.

Sure can't be sad looking at this quilt!!

Next order of business was the Trunk Show on October 18th, put on by Jennifer of Picket Fence in Brockville. She will also be bringing some goodies for us to buy!!! Needless to say we are all looking forward to that evening!!

This is our inhouse artist - Audrey! And boy, is she good. When she's not producing fabulous quilts, she does some incredible art. Here is a small sketch she whipped up. Pretty impressive, eh!! Very talented lady.

Now Show and Tell.

This is our new member Rita.
There's simply no stopping her.
We are all going to be playing
'catch up' to this young quilter

On our left is Julia with her wonky stars all made out of scrap fabric. Really pretty!!

And on the right is Mary, with her very creative "circles" design from our workshop with Bethany Garner. Beautiful!!!

Well, I guess you're all up-to-date now. We're all looking forward to our next meeting and Trunk Show with Jennifer. Hopefully some of our friends from the "Co-Op Quilters" will be with us. Entrance fee is non-perishable food for the food bank. See you then!!!

Tip for Today!

For those of you that don't get "The Quilt Show", here is an excellent tip from Sharon Pederson!!

When you are using a book to make a quilt, take the book to somewhere like Bureau en Gros and have them 'coil bind' the book. This will allow the book to lie flat. Also, at the same time you can insert some 'pocket' pages, or plastic envelopes, to hold all your miscellaneous notes, etc.

Great idea!!

Tip for Today

After cutting all your binding, wrap it around an empty toilet paper roll, put a string through it, and wear it around your neck. Your binding won't get tangled, or get trapped under the legs of your chair.

Good Morning Everyone:

Sorry I am a little late, my batteries wore down, hence my delay and also missing some pics.

Great meeting Tuesday night. Although Mary Sinclair was not able to join us because of an emergency back home, her daughter, Julia, did a wonderful job of enlightening us on the powers of selvage! Following are some pics of Julia and a rug hooked with selvages and if you look closely you can also see a tea cozy, and what about that beautiful lap quilt! So much talent! It was a lot of fun and I bet more than a few of us will not look at our selvages again in the same way. Thanks Julia!!!

The rest of the evening was taken up planning for the CQQ meeting coming up in October and Show and Tell and what a show it was!

This is Rita, a new member, with her quilt.

Linda with one of the quilts to go to the Elizabeth House and the one she started
in this weekend's workshop.

This beauty was make by Jae who joined us last year
never having quilted before. This was made over
the summer, if you can believe it!
Quite an achievement.

Audrey and her circles (sorry about the blur), France with hers, and Allison (missing from the pic) with hers - all workshop masterpieces.

Unfortunately, this is just a portion of all the beautiful quilts we saw, but as I said, unfortunately my batteries died. Hopefully, we'll see some of the missing ones another time and my camera will be up and running.

So far, a great start to the new season!!!

Happy quilting everyone!

Weekend Workshops

Amazing that Allison was able to post on Sunday evening. I think probably the rest of us were in bed!!! exhausted from a weekend of working! Anyway, it was great fun - Bethany Garner is a great teacher!! She even managed to get me to open the lid on my "box" just a little. A few more shots for you.

Weekend workshop

Saturday and Sunday were spent doing quilting things with Bethany Garner from Kingston. She does wonderful freeform quilting. On Saturday she started with a mini trunk show and passed around some of her quilts for inspiration. Then she helped us get started with our own pieces. On Sunday we moved on to "quilts in the circular realm". Once again in a freeform style but this time with an emphasis on circular motifs. There were 10 people in the class and 10 very different designs taking shape. It will be great to see how they all end up!!

New Season Starts!!

Hi Everyone:

Well, last night was the start of a new and very promising season. I'd like to introduce you all to our new bosses! Starting on the left, Julia, Mary and Audrey.

Mary introduced our two new members, Rita, on right with her computer carrier. Real funky, fun fabric!!! Our other newby is Debbie. Hopefully she'll have something to show us next time.

We fine tuned some details about our upcoming workshops with Bethany Garner, one day will be "Quilts in the Circular Realm", the other day will be "Creative Design in Patchwork". There are still one or two spots open, so if you're interested, let Allison know. Weekend of Sept. 16 & 17 at Loblaws, corner St. Jacques and Cavendish. allison_haggarty@hotmail.com.

div>Julia wowed us with all the plans she has for us for the upcoming year. We are going to be very busy little beavers, oops, quilters!!!! Our next meeting, Sept. 20, we are going to have a very exciting, entertaining visitor, Mary Sinclair!!!! We enjoyed Mary's bubbling laughter at our Quilt Show and we are all looking forward to seeing her again. Jennifer from Picket Fence in Brockville, will be visiting in October for a trunk show, and of course, she will be bringing goodies!!! Just a taste of all the inspiring things to come!

Here are some pics of our Show and Tell.

Not the best job with the pics, but, oh well!! Enjoy!! See you in a couple of weeks.

March 7, 2011

Wow- just realized how long it's been since I blogged! I was away enjoying the sunny south for about a month, and since then- well, time flies!
The guild has been busy during this time of run- up to the show ( April 30 and May 1). We'll be setting up on Friday - so please let Sandra know if you'll be available, as well as your availability over the weekend- we need lots of help!

Shortly, Mary T. will need your info to register your quilts for showing- so start gathering together such details as- name of quilt, acknowledgment of who created the design/pattern, size, etc. Mary will let you know exactly what (I seem to recall a photo is needed, too.) We have a nice big hall - so lots of quilts, please.

We had a work day a week or so ago to start Christmas Place Mats which we will continue to make at the show (sort of an on-going show -and-tell). These are part of this year's community project, for which we won a bursary, as perhaps you recall. We plan to give them to the Montreal West Meals on Wheels. We also started a scrap top for an Elizabeth House mother, and plan to do more of these. We were given some wonderful fabric by Peter Russell, and we can think of no better way to use something that was so special to his late wife.

Last week, Audrey showed us how to make some very quick and wonderful little jewelry bags. She still has patterns, so ask for one if you weren't able to be with us.

I missed a great colour workshop (thanks, Julia),and a paper piecing one (thanks Alison). I was back for the binding workshop, which was very informative. We have been busy!!!

Now- coming up to the show- we need contributions for the raffle basket( any time now- give to Colleen or Linda) and contributions to the Silent Auction ( tell Mary T. or Lise your intentions- think they might have a form to fill in soon.) For the Silent Auction, this can be anything you think might sell- not necessarily quilt related- could be an offer of lessons, gift certificate to a restaurant, etc. etc. For the raffle basket- something "quilty" is best- a book, notions, etc.

Sorry - pictures will have to wait .

Happy quilting!

Meeting January 4, 2011

Happy New Year to all

It was good to be back with all the quilting gals last evening. It was especially nice to welcome a guest- Jay (not sure of spelling) who came along with Charlotte.
There were quite a few items to discuss, particularly as we zero in on "our show" .

A picture was circulated of the CQQ tree at the Art Museum. Our guild was responsible for both decorating (in November) and un- decorating (yesterday). We wondered collectively if the honour could perhaps be passed to another guild next year- remains to be seen!
Sandra had received a fair amount of info re: hosting a quilt registry. At such an event one can have a quilt registered formally for $5. The work involved in hostessing a registry seems to be more than we can contemplate at the moment. For those interested , though - there will be one in Laval on Feb. 18 - phone for info: 450-628-9950, and another at St; Lambert United Church in the spring - call Irene at 450-671-9301 for info .

Lo and behold- the banners for advertising our show have been located and are ready for editing. Also- Lise will contact Mo-West about the big bill board sign at Westminster and Sherbrooke. she had lots of great ideas for publicity- any and all ideas welcome .

Things to be doing now for our show- aside from finishing projects- find something for our raffle basket, and remember the Silent Auction - the sky's the limit when it comes to items for the latter
Remember- this Saturday- Feb. 8 at the church (regular meeting spot at 10 A.M. ) - sorting day. We have been blessed with some wonderful boxes of fabric, notions, books, etc. - so we need to do some culling of those boxes we already have. Come along- have fun while we sort, choose stuff for the boutique, silent auction, etc. Bring a sandwich if you can stay into the P.M.

Allison brought along her programme for the balance of the year. As usual, she has lined up some great ideas- starting with the next meeting which will feature our own Julia and colour theory. If you weren't there, Allison has sent the line-up to your email.

You'll remember that we won a community service bursary at the AGM. Well, among other ideas, we have decided to invest some of the money in Christmas fabric and create some simple but effective place mats to be given to Meals on Wheels in time for Christmas deliveries. To make things more interested, the plan is to cut out the pieces and then have a work station at the show- to show off what we do and how!

As far as the other bursary (for a teacher) Allison has had replies from two teachers and is awaiting two others. Then we'll be given the chance to consider, weigh in and a choice will be made- for a class to be held in September .

After all that we were ready for Show-and-Tell:

First up was Mary Thicke. Her musical grandson is going to be the lucky recipient of a fantastic music themed quilt. We all agreed that he is one lucky kid- as this quilt is stunning.

Julia brought a quilt made with Valori Wells fabric , from her Flora design. This wonderful spring into spring had us all smiling.

Barbara brought along a stash busting quilt - great colours, fabulous design - fun !

Our own Allison has entered the realm of fabric design. She brought samples of two designs she is having printed on fat quarters - see http://www.spoonflower.com/ if this inspires you to try yourself.

I brought a scrap, one-block quilt I had started a mere two years ago - it is finally quilted- one done- who knows how many more UFO's to go!

All in all a rewarding evening - hope to see many on Saturday!
