Last evening we had two workshops on binding. Pretty informative, even if I do say so myself. I'll start with me, since I went first. I must admit that France's method is much fancier, but I'm all about "SO MANY QUILTS, SO LITTLE TIME", so I choose the fast and easy method. Probably won't win any prizes, but you choose depending a lot on the quilt you're making. France gave out instructions on her method, and I did not. So I will give a description. Here's me hard at work and some of my attentive students:)
First you cut binding 2 1/2" (I strongly recommend the STRIP TICKET which gives instructions and measurements for bias tube binding). At the starting end, fold at 90 deg., then fold the binding in half, iron. (1 & 2)

Start sewing the folded binding to the edge of the front of your quilt with a 1/4" seam allowance.
CORNERS: Sew the binding to a 1/4" from the edge.(3) Fold the binding up, creating a diagonal fold, keeping a straight line with the edge of your quilt.(4) Holding in place, bring the binding strip down in line with the side edge of your quilt, making sure the fold lines up with the top edge of your quilt.(5) Start sewing at the top edge.

Stop sewing a few inches from the starting point.(6) Make sure you have enough binding to meet up and be covered by the original 90 deg. fold.(7) Cut. Open the binding at the 90 deg. fold, and insert the straight edge of the ending binding.(8) Line up with the edge of your quilt and sew.(9)

Now, iron your binding open, (10) then fold to the back and iron again.(11) You can pin if you want, but of course, I don't. (Takes time!!) Working on the front of your quilt, using a walking foot, a zipper foot, a quilt-in-the-ditch foot, or just a regular foot, sew right BESIDE the edge of your binding.(12)

As I said, the finish on '
the back will probably
not win any prizes, but
will save you lots of
time. On to the next
quilt!!!
Mitering the corners is just as easy. I think the pics are self-explanatory.
Here's France showing her method of two sided binding.
i.e. one colour on the front, and one on the back.
It's a beautiful finish! She gave out instructions, so I won't
(and probably couldn't) go
through it all here. If you missed
the meeting, I'm sure she'll give you a copy.
The quilt is beautiful as well!!!
Now, some Show and Tell:
Here's Jae's new creation. If her house is clean too, I'm going to be really upset!!! Where does she find the time???!?!?!?? Seems every meeting there's something new. (of course, no face)
Mary's new preemie quilt. So pretty!!
Here's Rita with the start of another preemie quilt. She says "That's it", but we'll believe it when we see it!!
So get your date books open. There's some great activities coming up!!
April 15th - France will be showing up how to do crazy placemats.
April 29th - Julia will be back with a workshop on "Dear Jane" and backstitching.
May 6th - France again with really great luggage tags. Make your luggage noticable!!
And of course, those of us that signed up, are looking forward to our workshop with Elaine Quehl.
Lots of stuff going on, so look forward to seeing everyone!!!
Oh, almost forgot, closing dinner is June 3rd. Linda has a great game planned for us - could win lots of fat quarters!!! (That's almost better than the lotto!!) More news about time and place later.
Happy quilting.
Sandra
